The social network is a brilliantly written movie that will stand up as a text to future generations about the ideology that was encompassing the current generation. If the viewer takes ‘facebook’ out of the story and simply looks at the tensions between all the characters, an ideology is revealed. The ‘creator’ of ‘facebook’ (in this fictional account) was a lonely bastard. He brought the world together, without having a single important relationship in the end. In fact, he had two relationships that were ruined.
The movie has so many themes interwoven into it, it can really be taken as a representational story of this time and related back and forth throughout time. It deals with power, greed, betrayal, connection all through this story of young people striving to do what? what happens in the story! these individuals want power! they want to be the social elite, and they want money! has this ever been so relevant than now? in the age of the young, asshole, smarter-than-you billionaire? Well might as well get it straight, these kids are smarter.
I really loved how the movie ended with Mark adding the girl he was trying to impress in the first scene of the movie. Also, about half way in, another character explains that he started Napster as a way to look cool for a girl. The movie is cyclical. It starts, ends, and has in between the very relatable notion of trying to look cool for that one girl.
Bill Buford wrote an amazing book called ‘Heat.’ He had a dream job writing and editing for The New Yorker and decided to do a piece on Mario Batali. This lead to a life changing experience for Buford where he ended up falling in love with the lifestyle of chefs and restaurant folk. The full title for the book is “Heat: an amateur’s adventures as kitchen slave, line cook, pasta maker, and apprentice to a Dante-quoting butcher in Tuscany” which is a perfect way to describe the book. He traveled the world working and learning about food and his book has become a staple for anyone who is remotely interested in food. His latest project is a BBC television show where he is traveling around France learning about French Cuisine.
Woke up today to the van spinning off the road due to a snow storm in Colorado. Luckily we are all ok and we didn’t have any van damage. We are all starting to feel the effects of this non-stop tour which was routed for buses but 3 out of 4 bands are in vans. The guys in Moneen, who we’ve really bonded with had some van trouble and had to cancel a few dates. We are picking them up tomorrow and two of the guys are going to hop in our van and play the some dates acoustic until their van is up and running. I’m battling a pretty nasty cold (swine flu?) right now and driving through the night and playing shows has been really rough on my body. Can’t wait till I’m back to 100%.
Just arrived in Portland after driving through the night from San Francisco. Kirby and I were driving as the sun was coming up and saw an amazing part of northern California. The show last night was a lot of fun despite breaking a string half way through our last song. Kirby ended up getting the boot from the venue for drinking, we met up with him around the corner and hung out with some new and old friends that live in the area. Once we got into Portland we hit up Voodoo Doughnuts which has been on a bunch of travel and food shows (Bourdain!)…right now were hanging at a coffee bar down the street from the venue, feeling tired but ready for another great night.
Watching horror movies and drinking Shiner beer and cheap wine, check out our new music video! http://soundsofbuzz.com/coca-cola/
Woke up way to hung over today in Arkansas, which was one of the stranger places I’ve been to. After a much needed nap in the Van Kirby and I got around to watching the Motorcyle Diaries. The movie was great and nice to watch while being on the road ourselves, Drag Me To Hell and 28 Days Later are next on the list. Been listening to a lot of Broken Social Scene recently, excited for what they are going to put out next (they’re recording in Chicago right now). Also we have been rocking out to the new Minus The Bear song which is really awesome.
Finally charged my phone after it’s been dead for a while, so gotta catch up with that. Mitch and I just ate at Twisted Root burgers (in Dallas), very good.
Being in the van gives you a lot of time to listen to music. I finally got my headphones up and running for this tour and they have really helped escape the feeling of being in a van for hours and ours (myspace.com/forhoursandours..listen to On A Weekend). Just found that Kings of Convenience record and I have a good feeling I’ll be listening to that quite a bit in the van. Nick has been playing the new Silversun Pickups record and some Mobius Band in the van and it’s felt nice to be turned on to some new music.
I’m still trying to find a name for a new project i’ve started with my brother, Mov Mou’s new amazing and danm sexy sound guy Josh Kirby has helped out quite a bit with the record and has been producing and recording it. I’m really excited to play a show for the release of that record, it’s going to be a fun time. The lyrics are still not 100% done so I’m hoping some time in the van might spark a creative streak.
I Bought the Motorcycle Diaries before tour and have yet to watch it so I’m definitely going to make that a priority for the next van ride. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t get a Flip cam in time for tour! I would have really loved to get some video of all of us on the road.
Hanging out at Greg’s aunts house having Ricci show me a thing or two about tumblr. Trying to find the new Kings Of Convenience record, the single is amazing. I’m also hoping to download a few movies to watch on the road. We set up a great system to watch movies in the van, watched Adventureland with Nick and Mitch last night.
